Mother Priorities

Dear Friends,

Forgive me for the neglect of my blog recently, but these have been very busy, and in some ways traumatic, couple of weeks for me. (For those of you reading this on Facebook: No, I am not cheating and coming back to Facebook; my blog RSS feed is attached to it! Frankly, I may never come back to stay, but that's another post for another day. Read on!)

I might be crazy busy, but I read something today that is helping me a bunch! A great blogging friend I love and admire posted some great thoughts yesterday, and I want to share them with all you wonderful ladies who read Old-Fashioned Motherhood.

Here's an excerpt of her simple, beautiful words of wisdom:

Are we pursuing the internet, book reading, TV time, shopping, crafting with the Spirit? Have we first done our family work for the day and ensured that everything is well ordered? Then with the Spirit directing us we will read the right book for the right amount of time. We will pursue worthwhile art that will bless our family. We will use the internet for a limited time to study or do family history. We will do it at the right time and for the right amount time because the Spirit will be our constant companion.

When we have the power of the Spirit, which comes from correct priorities, we will have that constant guide telling us what to do and how to live our lives. We will learn how to submit. We will have Christ has our 'living center.'

Love,

  2. That's why I love scheduling posts when I can. In this way I can get on once or twice a month and make posts enough for several weeks. Then I only need to think about making one if something comes up and then I'll quick sit down and make a current one. I really try not to be online at all during my children's waking hours except for quick looks.

  4. I've been reading a book you advised me to read some time ago, Rachel. "Fascinating Womanhood" mentions that one of the key ways to have inner happiness is to fulfill all of our work at home. If we allow ourselves to be derailed by entertainment or less worthy causes, then we will not complete everything as we need to, leaving us with lower self-esteem and wishing we had managed our time better. I have been taking this to heart and it makes such a difference in my day as I can see the progress I made because of giving up time wasters.

    Thanks for recommending "Fascinating Womanhood"!

  5. I love this-- thank you! This is true-- when I spend the day with my daughter, even though she is only two, and give her my attention and make sure I am doing the routines that I have decided are important for her--Spiritual time, chores, etc, I am so much happier, as well as patient. I love being a wife and mother! Rachel, I have lost your email address, but I have started a new blog that I wanted to share with you-- brilliantatthebasics.blogspot.com

  7. Thank you for the timely post; the I am pondering. It is hard to choose what things we are going to feel our life with. Last week I spent a good deal of time trying to be a blog missionary; but in retrospect I do need to make better choices with my time.
    Your thoughts and your friends were good for me to think about.
    Blessings to you!
    I do find that Blogging is better than facebook because it seems more permanant and a better place to write thoughts and also to journal experiences whic is a good thing.

  8. I miss you, Rachel! You have no idea how much my life has changed since your visit. I am so grateful for it all. We are having our first meet and greet with a group of local homeschoolers tomorrow if the weather is nice; I'm nervous, but very excited, too!

  9. Thanks for your great thoughts, LeAnn! I agree about blogging vs. Facebook. (Especially since I am finding that the real-time socializing is addictive FOR ME.)

    Mandy, I am sooo excited for you and your family!!! I can't wait to hear all about it! I'm counting down the days to July so we can visit and REALLY talk again! {{{HUGS!}}}

  10. YOu know I have thought about that too, BUT in the same sense I believe those of us who have light should share it. We make the world a better place when we share. Yes, the internet can take up a lot of time, BUT I know when I neglect my blog (which happens often) I am neglecting to share that light with others. So many people, yourself included, encourage, uplift, lead and inspire others. I think the key is balance.
