Babies Don't Keep

Our Davy at 4 1/2 months old

Some days, we just need to stop and savor the baby moments...
Mother, O' Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth.
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek - peekaboo.
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew,
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo.
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

  1. I love this poem so much! Thank you for sharing it.

  2. They sure don't! My "baby" is going to be 15 in June. Where has the time gone? Thanks so much for sharing this.

  3. Yes, enjoy the sweet moments with this little one. I loved the pictures and the poem. Children do grow up fast and now I get to rock away with my darling grandchildren.

  4. My baby is over 2 years old now and I'm shocked. Wasn't it only yesterday she was small enough to hold in one arm? Wasn't she a feather's weight in my sling and now I struggle to give her a piggyback ride?
Truer words were never spoken - thank you for the poem.
